    A Maldivian greenhouse, Dutch horticulture and international stakeholders. To find out how the intended crops will react to the Maldivian climate we are conducting a tomato grow test. Of course we have done initial calculations with the help of a Dutch greenhouse builder. But growing actual tomatoes in a controlled environment in the intended climate is a good benchmark: a hands-on practical approach.

    My name is Ruben, a Msc Water Management student performing my Msc Thesis research in Malawi! Food and water are topics of genuine concern to many people in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. Most Malawians are smallholder farmers, meaning they farm on only a very little portion of land, and they often purely rely on highly variable rain as a source of water. Given the large number of smallholder farmers and the many challenges they face, improving irrigation to water crops is an attractive opportunity to secure food and develop rural areas.

    Nosquito Bait: A new vector control solution for malaria

    Nosquito is a design team of four master students from Delft University of Technology at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Together with MSF (Medicines Sans Frontières), an organization working globally and offering emergency medical assistance to refugees and victims of, among other things, epidemics, it is our mission to significantly reduce malaria infection by mosquitoes in Kenya.

  • Maldives Matter

    The Maldives, an 800 km long island group in the Indian Ocean. The lack of agriculture due to climate and knowledge result in a big problem: 90% of its food is being imported. This results into a high CO2 emmission due to transport (the food comes from all over the world), a big cashflow that doesn’t stay at the local communities, a high dependency on foreign countries and lack of knowledge and education because of a lack of this industry. Our plan is to realize a high-tech greenhouse in the Maldives.

    Schistoscope.

    Schistosomiasis is a parasitically neglected tropical disease that mainly occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. More than 250 million people are infected and 700 million have the chance of infection. This parasite is mainly found in still standing water sources. The danger of this parasite is that it penetrates through the skin surface. After this it multiplies in the bladder and transforms into worms that move through the bloodstream to all organs and then affect them.

  • Sustainable Siyakhana

    In 2005 on a hectare-sized piece of land located in the middle of Bezuidenhout Park within the inner city of Johannesburg, Prof Michael Rudolph, together with colleagues and community representatives, established Siyakhana, a food garden and social entrepreneurial enterprise that has evolved into a platform for research, training and a capacity-building incubator and resource hub. Our project is to design and build a small biodigester to recycle and re-use organic waste that is created in the Siyakhana garden. With the help of this biodigester, we will give workshops in order to teach the farmers about sustainable farming and entrepreneurship, e.a. selling the produced biogas and fertilizer from the biodigester. Evans Muchesa, a PhD student from the university of Johannesburg will oversee the process of social entrepreneurship in order to ensure the continuity of the project after our departure

    The Problem
    The drought is a huge problem for the growing population of Cape Town, South Africa. Especially the communities in the “townships”, the suburbs in which during the Apartheid “non-whites” lived, are struggling with the water scarcity. On top of that, gangs, thieves and junkies are causing an unsafe environment, especially for children.

  • Uplifted Zanzibar

    Zanzibar is a tiny island at the coast of Tanzania. It is known for its breath-taking white beaches and clear blue waters. However, this beauty is as much a blessing as it is a curse. Tourism is an important income generator for the island but also generates a huge amount of waste.  A local company named Chako transforms this downside of tourism into a great opportunity: to reduce the waste and help employ the local youth and women. This is very important given the fact that half the population on Zanzibar lives below the poverty line.
