Chalé Spirulina

Location: Ghana | |

Our project focuses on supporting Chalé Spirulina, a certified B-corp social enterprise in Ghana, to scale up their sustainable spirulina production and combat local malnutrition. Spirulina is a micro algae superfood that consists of 60% plant protein, many minerals and antioxidants.

We aim to design a cost-effective shade net system to optimize growing conditions for this spirulina. Our system will feature a roll-in/roll-out mechanism, allowing adjustment based on weather conditions. The construction will support Chalé’s current production capacity of 500 kg/month and serve as a prototype for a larger facility planned in the future for 2026.

In September and October, we conducted research remotely from the Netherlands. From November to January, we are based at Chalé’s facility in Kumasi, Ghana. Here we will develop and test prototypes, source materials, and collaborate with local partners. This hands-on approach combines engineering, entrepreneurship, and sustainability to help Chalé Spirulina expand its nutritional and socio-economic impact.
