Hey,
My name is Sander Giling and I am a master student of IDE. For my internship I chose to go to Ghana to construct a Cooling Chamber in cooperation with ACHI. ACHI is an organisation from the Green Village in Delft that promotes and helps agriculture projects in Ghana. One of those projects is a cooling chamber. A cooling chamber is a small building that uses evaporative cooling to prevent post harvest waste without/minimal use of electricity. That’s because most farmers in Ghana don’t have electricity near their farm. This causes losses in vegetable harvest of around 30%-50%. An amount the farmers can’t afford. The camber will be built upon designs of another cooling chamber. During my visit I will see the other cooling chambers to be inspired by it and learn from their mistakes. After finalizing my plans I’ll start constructing the chamber together with the local craftsman, students and school representatives. The duration of the project will take 3 months to complete.
After the construction a manual will be made. This manual will be used for farmers or other interested to make the chamber themselves. There’ll also be an open day organised to show the project to local students and farmers. The intention is that people will be inspired and see the possibilities.
I want to thank Students4Sustainability for making a big contribution to the budget and making this wonderful project possible
