UPDATE I: Ghana Cooling Chamber

The Project is going well at the moment, and a lot of progress has already been made. The concrete foundation has been poured, and most of the metal frame is finished. During construction, progress is often slowed down by the working pace and attitudes of the Ghanaian workers, but in the end, things always turn out fine. Personally, it’s something that continues to take some getting used to.

This week, the metal frame with the door will be installed, after which we’ll start building the floor structure. To reduce heat transfer from the ground and allow excess moisture to escape, the chamber is suspended above the ground. The floor and ceiling will be insulated with coconut fibre. This material is abundant here, sustainable, and has excellent insulating properties. This way, we can cool and insulate the space as efficiently as possible.

Once these steps are completed, construction of the roof will begin as the final part of the build. The last phase, which involves filling the walls with charcoal and activating the cooling system, is planned for the end of the month. This conveniently coincides with the start of the dry season, making it the perfect time to test the effectiveness of the chamber.
