UPDATE I: Mangrove Conservation

Hey everyone,

Here's a small update from Guatemala, where we are conducting research with a group of six on the regrowth of a mangrove forest! Unfortunately, some parts of the mangroves were burned down about 20 years ago. Since then, the mangrove forest has only grown back to a limited extent.

About 7 weeks into our project, we have already had many opportunities to explore the mangrove forests, both on foot and by boat. By talking to people from the community and learning from our supervisor Myrna, who works for FUNDAECO, we are gradually getting to know the forest and its beautiful fauna.

We have finished the fieldwork, where we dove into the salt intrusion of the tide, the sediment content in the water, the flow velocities, the water quality and the precipitation data of the area. What rests us in the last 3 weeks of our project are processing the results and drawing our conclusions. In the end our goal is to be able to sketch a complete hydrological picture of the area. By working close with the community, we strive to combine local knowledge with scientific research to better understand how the mangroves can recover and thrive once again.
