UPDATE I: Guatemala cloudchasers

Hi!

Cloudchasers IV, a multidisciplinary team of five master’s students, is building a 13.5-meter monitoring tower in the cloud forest of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. The goal of this project is to collect long-term data on climate, hydrology, and cloud interactions in the Mestelá River catchment.

In partnership with Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC), the team is installing sensors to monitor rainfall, fog, soil moisture, and more. The site and design were chosen for long-term use, with room for future additions like bioacoustic monitoring and above canopy measurements.

Preparations for construction are currently being finalized, alongside active involvement of the local community through workshops, shared decision-making, and hands-on collaboration at the site.
Once complete, the tower will support data-driven research and conservation in one of the world’s most vital ecosystems.
