New Project: Rio Coco

Published on: May 16, 2018 - 3:01 PM

Safe drinking water is in some areas really vulnerable and a lack in water can inhibit the development of some countries. Nicaragua, one of the poorest countries of central-America, is such country. The main focus of this project is to provide safe drink water in the area around Rio Coco, a polluted river at the border with Honduras. We want to develop the area in a way that locals can relay daily on safe drink water.

Previous studies have shown that rainwater collection tanks are the most suitable drinking water suppliers in this area. The construction of the water tanks will stimulate local entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. So on this way, we will set our first steps toward a sustainable local business and lasting employment opportunities. This will eventually results in a long term development in the area around Rio Coco.

The project will also consist of 3 studies: How can we optimize the maintenance of the Calabash water tanks?;what is the quality and quantity of the raining water and ground water in the area?; what are the wishes and demands of the locals?

The project will be set in the villages Klisnak and El Naranjal. The distance between the villages is around 15 minutes by foot. Both villages are next to the Rio Waspuk. After eight weeks of construction, the water tanks will be ready to be used by all the families in the city.
